AI Incident Database – Data Sources & Citation
The AI incident reports shown on this site are derived from the AI Incident Database (AIID). This page explains how to attribute and cite the data to comply with the AIID’s citation requirements.
Citing the database as a whole
When referring to the AI Incident Database in general (e.g. in publications or reports), the AIID invites you to cite:
McGregor, S. (2021) Preventing Repeated Real World AI Failures by Cataloging Incidents: The AI Incident Database. In Proceedings of the Thirty-Third Annual Conference on Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence (IAAI-21). Virtual Conference.
Citing a specific incident
Every incident in the AIID has its own suggested citation. On each incident page on this site we provide a direct link to the official citation:
Format: https://incidentdatabase.ai/cite/INSERT_NUMBER_HERE
Replace INSERT_NUMBER_HERE with the incident’s ID. Use that link to obtain the full suggested citation for that incident.
How we use the data
We use weekly snapshots of the AI Incident Database (see Database Backups and Snapshots) to provide a stable reference for incident data.
The AIID asks that you contact them to report how you are using the database so they can list your work and ensure your use case continues to be supported.
