Alleged AI-Enabled PRISONBREAK Influence Operation on X Reportedly Synchronizes Deepfake of Evin Prison Strike with Ongoing Attacks in Tehran

June 23, 2025

Researchers from Citizen Lab and Clemson uncovered a network of over 50 inauthentic X accounts operating under an alleged AI-enabled influence campaign. The operation reportedly synchronized its activities with the June 23 Evin Prison strikes, disseminating an AI-generated video depicting 'attacks' during the events and urging Iranians to free prisoners. Other synthetic media and media impersonations were also part of this effort. Researchers assess, with medium confidence, that Israeli government or contractor involvement is likely.

This incident highlights the need for trustworthy AI governance and harm prevention measures in AI systems, as well as the importance of mapping such activities to HISPI Project Cerebellum TAIM (Govern, Map). For those interested in shaping safe and secure AI practices, JOIN US.
