Alleged Deepfake of Luis Suárez Used to Scam Uruguayans in Fake Investment Scheme

December 26, 2024

On December 26, 2024, UTE (Uruguay's public utility company) alerted the public about a deepfake video disseminated on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. The video, manipulating images and voice of footballer Luis Suárez, fraudulently promoted an investment scheme promising 175,000 pesos monthly returns for a 10,400 peso investment. The deepfake also incorporated AI-altered footage from Telemundo. UTE strongly advises against sharing personal data as the links lead to phishing sites disguised as legitimate sources.
