AllHere's Chatbot 'Ed' Fails and Costs Los Angeles Unified School District $6 Million

July 1, 2024

The Los Angeles Unified School District invested a significant $6 million in the development of an AI chatbot named 'Ed', intended to support students' academic and mental health needs. However, the project encountered challenges as AllHere, the start-up behind it, faced financial struggles. This led to the project's collapse, raising concerns about the governance and accountability of AI systems. The incident also impacted Prince George's County Public Schools in Maryland. Notably, the founder, Joanna Smith-Griffin, was replaced as CEO in June 2024 and subsequently arrested on fraud charges.
