Deepfake Cryptocurrency Scam Allegedly Impersonates Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni

December 12, 2024

A deepfake scam, impersonating the Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, was circulated across various platforms. This deception promoted a fraudulent cryptocurrency investment scheme, falsely claiming state backing and offering guaranteed returns of €40,000 to investors. Victims were lured into investing €250, only to lose access to their funds. The Italian financial regulator, Consob, swiftly blocked the misleading ads and websites, marking the first enforcement of new regulations aimed at preventing financial fraud.
