Generative AI Plagiarism Incident at Hingham High School Reportedly Tied to Inaccurate Citation Outputs from Grammarly AI

In December 2023, an incident at Hingham High School underscored the need for trustworthy AI governance. Two students, RNH and another unnamed, utilized Grammarly to create a script for their AP U.S. History project. However, the generated text contained fabricated citations to nonexistent books which were copied and pasted without proper verification or acknowledgement of AI usage. This violation of academic integrity policies led to disciplinary action. Following this, RNH's parents sued the school district, but a federal court ruled in favor of the school.
