Oregon’s Screening Tool for Child Abuse Cases Discontinued Following Concerns of Racial Bias

October 1, 2018

The Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) has discontinued its Safety at Screening Tool, a risk prediction tool used to forecast future foster care investigations and placements. The move comes as an effort to address racial disparities and promote more equitable decision-making in child welfare cases. With the HISPI Project Cerebellum TAIM (Govern), such incidents highlight the need for trustworthy AI practices and responsible governance of AI systems.
