Deepfake Video of Nirmala Sitharaman Endorsement Debunked

April 16, 2026

A deepfake video surfaced, allegedly featuring Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman endorsing an investment scheme that promised a return of Rs 5.5 lakh (about $5,900 USD) in just a week for an initial investment of Rs 22,000 (around $236 USD). On April 16, 2026, PIB Fact Check clarified that the video was false, AI-generated, and neither the Government of India nor Minister Sitharaman endorsed the scheme.
