Purportedly AI-Generated Images Reportedly Spread Misinformation During Hurricane Helene Response

September 24, 2024

During Hurricane Helene (September 24-29, 2024), allegedly AI-generated images circulated on social media, reportedly causing misinformation and disrupting disaster response efforts. The spread of these images included fake images of animals stranded on rooftops and political figures in floodwaters, adding to the confusion during emergency management. The dissemination of such images is believed to have worsened existing challenges such as power outages and communication failures, ultimately complicating the provision of accurate information to those affected.
